When iphone launched and people preferred it over corporate provided blackberries, BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) started becoming popular in corporates. The reason being there was no alternative to iphone, and people were not willing to use blackberries as primary phones. with better internet and app store capabilities, iphone became the de facto standard for mobile phones, then later android joined the race.
Inside corporates now people are expressing their preferences and choices , mac's, windows, linux, android, ios, chromebooks, headphones etc.
Many corporates allocate you a budget for buying your own devices and also for setting up your home office as most work remotely now than coming in person to office.
BYOD became popular due to several reasons:
Cost-saving: Employers realized that allowing their employees to use their own devices for work could save them money on hardware and maintenance costs.
Convenience: BYOD allows employees to use devices that they are already familiar with, which can increase productivity and reduce the learning curve associated with using new devices.
Increased mobility: BYOD allows employees to work from anywhere, at any time, as long as they have their device and an internet connection. This can increase productivity and flexibility.
Changing workforce demographics: The rise of the millennial generation in the workforce, who are comfortable with using their personal devices for work, has contributed to the popularity of BYOD.
Technology advancements: Advances in mobile technology and the increasing prevalence of cloud-based applications have made it easier for employees to access work-related information and applications from their personal devices.
Overall, BYOD has become popular due to its potential to reduce costs, increase productivity, and improve employee satisfaction by allowing them to use their own devices for work.
Now a new era of BYOK is starting to emerge, where people are bringing their own keys to access the new AI via new tools and interfaces. But this is not into corporates but for trying out AI platforms. Many of the AI platforms are onboarding after a long waitlist.
So many new apps are coming out after chatgpt api was launched last week, over 100 apps have been launched in the last 7 days, and many more are coming out every day. It costs money to run these apps, and the only way to make money is to charge for the data, and the only way to charge for the data is to have a way to verify that the person who is accessing the data is the person who paid for it.
BYOK will become popular in the next few years, and I think it will be the next big thing in the world of data science and machine learning. every AI platform provider will give you to try keys for free, but you will have to pay for the keys if you want to use them for more than a few hours. user interface will be of your choosing.
Dont share your keys with anyone, you credit card may be charged for its usage, also the new generative AI can do good and bad things and Key owner may be held responsible for the actions of the AI.
Thanks Senthil for elucidating about BYOD and BYOK.
Wikipedia says BYOK is also know as BYOE. I guess for ordinary users BYOK is more understandable.

For creating our own keys (BYOK), are there any preferred method/software ?
Thank you.
